Eats with a Fork (part 3)

[My maternal grandmother, Sibyl Mary Croly, was born in Cadillac, Michigan on February 29, 1888, to James Croly and Maria (Cowles) (Dennett) Croly.  In 1889, her father started a journal about her, entitled "The Record of Little Sibyl." This is an exact transcription of the contents.]

Eats with a Fork

One Sunday when Sibyl was 16 months old, she surprised us all by picking up Mamma’s fork during a temporary absence of Mamma from the table and helping herself to food. Of course there was a grand chorus of “See that,” and laughter.

Sibyl’s feet at 16 months. “It tickled.”

The foregoing are outlines of Sibyl’s feet when she was 16 months old. We could not get a very good outline because she said the pencil “tickled,” and moved her feet a little, but the size is all right. The outline of the hands on the following page was taken at the same time.

Helped to Milk the Cow

During the summer of 1889 whenever I could be home at milking time, I would take the Baby out to the barnyard when Mamma milked the cow and have some warm milk milked into Sibyl’s “own cup” for her to drink. She seemed to like it better than anything else. She would say, “more,” “more,” like Oliver Twist till satisfied.

She would talk about the “cow” and “Tory,” the name she gave to a calf we called Victoria, and the chickens or “Tickens” and “Quack Quack” which was her name for the ducks, and help papa to gather up the eggs, break ’em too sometimes, and seemed at that early time to enjoy out door life very much. She took a great interest in animals and birds and growing things. So much so, that she would go into Mamma’s radish bed and pull the radishes up by the roots and eat them, with the sand and earth still adhering to them.

I do not know that as yet anything has been said of the great love that filled all our hearts for the Baby. Her coming seemed to make us all love each other more and better than ever before. As we were all loving, patient and tender with the baby, so we all seemed to be more patient and considerate of each other.

Hands at 16 months.
